Portraits of: Barcelona

Paulo was sitting at one of the benches along my favourite street/neighbourhood in Barcelona, Passeig de Sant Joan. Originally from Chile, USA, he moved here as he felt his hometown was overwhelmingly emulating the American lifestyle, and has called Barcelona home for the past 10 years. It was after speaking to him that I learnt that the art exhibit being set up along the street was part of an annual artwork competition held by the districts in the city. He shared his joy at seeing passers by connect with his art – a triadic conversation that must be so sacred and magical to the artist. I returned to watch the award ceremony and catch up with my ex-flatmate. He won the competition with his paintings: Sunday, Friday 3am, Fireworks. You can see them on his website here: http://escobar-elorza.blogspot.sg/ Name: Paulo And your dream? Be able to feel at home everywhere. The best thing that has happened to you? Wake up this morming. One thing you would like to change? (It can be about anything) I would change the …

Portraits of: Barcelona

Barcelona, 2013 (Fuji Neopan 400) Joan was singing at one of the tunnels at Espanya metro station with so much feelings and joy. I dropped my change in his guitar case and continued walking, but something pulled me back and I handed him the non-verbal request written in Spanish, prepared to be rejected and perhaps laughed at. He gave a short laugh and a smile, and nodded his consent. The power of his emotions really struck me. Initially, my Spanish friend who helped with translation thought he was an angry man, but actually, maybe he has observed (or experienced) and accepted the pain that comes with life. Otherwise, how can he sing with such joy every day? Name: Joan And your dream? I have so many? The best thing that has happened to you? My sons. One thing you would …

Barcelona, 2013 (Fuji Neopan 400) Valentina quit her job, packed her bags and came to Barcelona to eke out a living last year. She is from Italy and decided to pursue and work at what will make her happy, in a city that caught her heart (Paris is second). It seems that often the simplest desires require much courage and difficult decisions… Name: Valentina And your dream? Be free The best thing that has happened to you? Fell in love One thing you would like to change? (It can be about anything) My job One thing you don’t want to change? (It can be about anything) The person who I’m now Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? I would like to have an interesting job that makes me happy and I hope to find a man that …

Portraits of: Barcelona

Alexandra was my first portrait subject. I caught her as she was taking a short smoke break in between a hectic day at work. It was pretty ironic that a rolled cigarrette accompanied her pondering over the questions (read her answers below). She also replied to the thank you with a really sweet well wishing. Name: Alexandra And your dream? My dream is to be happy with what I do every day, no matter what it is. The best thing that has happened to you? I did an internship in Malta [a] few years ago and it opened my mind. One thing you would like to change? (It can be about anything) Quit smoking! One thing you don’t want to change? (It can be about anything) I want to keep trying to have fun and smile every single day. Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? I really have no idea 🙂 Favorite things about Barcelona? The sun, the buildings, the mix of people, the chances it offers Things you don’t really like …

Portraits of: Barcelona

Barcelona, 2013 (Fuji Neopan 400) Mercè was one of my students in the intermediate class. She was one of my last portraits – this was taken on my last day in the city – and affirmed the simple desire and more importantly, the courage to express this desire to be happy. Do we as Singaporeans dare to declare that all we wish for is happiness – and work towards it? Name: Mercè And your dream? Travel around the world The best thing that has happened to you? I’ve been living for three months in NYC One thing you would like to change? (It can be about anything) I hope one day to speak english. Everybody can be happy One thing you don’t want to change? (It can be about anything) Happiness Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? …

Portraits of: Barcelona

Barcelona, 2013 (Fuji Neopan 400) Nerea now works as a social worker in the city. She spoke about how amazing the journey to learn and discover oneself is, and in her course of work, she is realising how different some people’s childhoods and lives are. However, sometimes there are limitations in her course of work, and frustrates her in her desire to effect positive change. She loves to listen to the ‘murmur of the streets’; the conversing of the people surrounding her, the everyday life and sounds of apartments above and around. Name: Nerea And your dream? Be happy. The best thing that has happened to you? To know and understand myself. One thing you would like to change? (It can be about anything) The economic situation as much as the social situation existent in Spain. One thing you don’t …
